Down to Earth Celebrates 40 Years of Service to Hawaii

This year marks Down to Earth’s 40th Anniversary of service to Hawaii. Down to Earth began in 1977, in Wailuku, Maui, when a group of friends started our first store (pictured above), and shortly afterwards opened the King Street store.  They did so out of a desire to help improve the health of Hawaii’s residents by making available organic and natural products at affordable prices (the slogan used to be, “Healthy foods at prices that won’t make you sick!”), and educating about the many benefits of living a vegetarian lifestyle.

Down to Earth’s Long-Term Goal is to be: All-Organic & GMO-Free

As we move towards our long-term goal to be all-organic and GMO-free, we give priority to organic and Non-GMO Project Verified products in our purchasing decisions, and are gradually eliminating products that contain GMOs.

Down to Earth Proudly Holds Non-GMO Sale To Celebrate Hawaii Residents' Right to Know!

Ua Mau ke Ea o ka 'Âina i ka Pono, "The life of the land is perpetuated in righteousness," Hawaii’s state motto, is attributed to King Kauikeaouli Kamehameha III, who said these words on the historic occasion of the restoration of the Hawaiian flag to the Kingdom of Hawaii by the British in 1843. Righteousness can be understood as "right” or “right action." GMOs are not "right," they disrespect and lead to desecration of the 'aina both here in Hawaii and worldwide. GMOs are not pono, they are not right.

GMOs Should Be Labeled

This legislative session, elected officials are considering SB2279, a bill requiring the mandatory labeling of genetically modified fruits and vegetables grown in Hawaii, for sale in Hawaii.

Down to Earth Organic & Natural

Everyone is talking about so-called “green” solutions. It is a lucrative business for many companies. But one doesn't need to rely on business solutions to make a difference. As we think about going “green,” many people would be surprised to learn that adopting a vegetarian diet is the single most important thing a person can do to reduce one's personal impact on the environment.

Aloha, and a Happy New Year.

Goodwill to All Living Beings

Aloha. ‘Tis the holiday season, a time of goodwill to all.

Despite this noble spirit, somehow the holidays are also the season for the consumption of even larger numbers of chickens, turkeys, pigs and cows! Approximately 10 billion animals a year, which is over 30 million animals a day, are cruelly slaughtered in the USA alone. I am not sure how many are slaughtered for the holidays, but the numbers are likely astounding. So, this Christmas season, as we think of goodwill to all people, let’s also show compassion and goodwill to all living beings, including the innocent animals.

Vegetarian Lifestyle Can Help Reduce Pandemic Disease – "Love animals, don’t eat them!"

It is ironic that the meat industry—long touted as key to good nutrition—puts the health of people in our island ohana and throughout the world at risk time and again. The current outbreak of H1N1 Flu (Swine Flu) virus speaks for itself, although plenty of other examples abound. These include the Avian Flu influenza of 1997, Mad Cow Disease of 1986, and the massive outbreak of toxic Pfiesteria in 1997.

Help Reduce the Spread of H1N1 Flu (Swine Flu)

Dear Friends of Down to Earth, Down to Earth is closely monitoring the H1N1 Flu (Swine Flu) situation and has preparations in place to protect the health of our customers and team members.
